The North Coast is where the Dominican Republic surfs and kites. Las Canas sits on a quiet stretch of it, so a surf group can wake up on an empty beach and drive to the busier breaks when it wants more.
Surfing in front of the retreat
Surfboards and paddleboards are free for every guest. The Atlantic is right in front of the suites, so a dawn session is a walk across the lawn. After the last session: the jacuzzi, a big meal from our chef and an early night.
Playa Encuentro
Past Cabarete, Playa Encuentro is the beach locals call surfer beach. It has reliable waves, many surf schools and friendly instructors, and it suits first timers as well as strong surfers. It hosted the World Surf League, the first time the league came to the Dominican Republic, yet it stays quiet and unspoiled.
Cabarete’s Kite Beach
Cabarete, about 30 minutes from Las Canas, is the country’s kitesurfing hotspot. A reef about 200 meters out breaks the waves, leaving calm water on the inside for learners, with certified kite schools all along the beach. Experienced riders can do a downwinder toward Bozo or Encuentro. Windsurfers use the same wind.
Planning a surf group week
- Boards and lessons. Free boards at the retreat; we book lessons for a fee.
- Transport. We arrange rides to Encuentro and Kite Beach, and to and from the airport.
- Meals around sessions. Early breakfasts before dawn sessions, dinner after the last one.
- Rest days. A waterfall hike or horseback riding. See the area guide.
What it costs
The whole retreat is $3,250 to $3,750 a night for 48 to 60 guests, so a group of 24 surfers pays from $135.42 each per night. See what a buyout costs and our surf retreats page.
